Chiefly family letters describing life in the field with the Confederate army and on the home front in S.C., including letter, 8 Dec. 1861, Columbia, S.C., to "Sister," Edgefield County, S.C., re his first night at Camp Hampton and advising his brother about enlistment and the draft. Letter, 8 Feb. 1862, to "My Dear Father," re poor conditions in camp, possibility of returning home, and death of John Robert Aiken; letter, 28 June 1862, to "My Dear Sir," written from a military hospital in Petersburg, Va., re recovering from his wound, high prices of goods, returning into battle, Union prisoners of war, cannons, and field reports from the Peninsular Campaign. Also including letter, 7 Nov. 1839, to Mary Aiton, Edgefield, S.C., from Sarah A. Branch, re death of Emma Aiton.
